The bike CAN pull that gearing when it's unlocked. I would suggest not to change gearing until you flash the ECU. Stop and go riding and just taking it easy are so much more fun. The bike is such a pleasure to ride now and so effortless. But don't underestimate how nice the bottom and midrange improvement is. I do love the alpha top end and think it's super cool to have it unlocked. The bike is literally improved from bottom to top end. But to anyone else, do be careful and get used to it. I believe if you unlock it, you know what you're in for. But of course, that top end hits harder with the unlocked ECU and the bike will legitimately power wheelie in third and fourth gear if you scream it. The flashed bike pulls super crisp into a much improved midrange and transitions much smoother into the excellent top end this bike is known for. If you think it pulls away good, you need to ride other bikes. A 200 bhp bike that can barely pull away from a stop light. The bike easily pulls away from stop lights, just let the clutch out and effortlessly, it pulls away. But the bottom end and midrange increase combined with incredible throttle response. That is a straight up safety problem in turns. First off, they fixed powermode 1 so it doesn't surge/jerk on throttle on/off and launch you off your line. The result? HELLO SUPERBIKE! Seriously they worked a miracle with their tune. I used the stock canister, block off plates and the SBU flash. Well made, similar shape to Akra and Scorpion linkage pipes for much less. For the purposes of science, I only bought a MJS Decat Linkage pipe for 235 on ebay. It is a honeycomb filter that does everything but let air through. If you look inside the CAT, you'll know why it sucks. That big weak dip in the midrange? Then at 7000 all of a sudden things happen? Feel like you're slipping the clutch a lot compared to your other bikes? I did. Even in power mode 1, the bike can barely pull that tall first gear away from a stop light. But Yamaha also neutered the bike's bottom/mid with fuel and ignition mapping and the dreaded CAT/servo. It could also be sound restrictions of course. I noticed after you undo it, the bikes tend to wheelie on the top end at that exact point. One has to think that the Japanese don't want their bikes to wheelie at those speeds. I've read that the 2017 GSXR will also skim the peak hp off. Honda did the same thing on my 2008 CBR1000R but they retarded the ignition at peak so the top end was flat. Yamaha cut about 8 horsepower off the peak by not letting the throttle by wire fully open. The bike in stock condition is neutered big time. A little precursor to set up this review on the SBU flash for the new model R1. I get sticky boogers on the edges of my tires and I've also been racing motocross most of my life and have a keen sense for how the bike feels and how it runs. Though I'm new to R1's and the forum, I've been riding since I was in first grade and have had a few liter bikes with full exhausts, shorter gearing and custom map tunes.
